Expressive Arts for Kids

Art is a natural language for children. Everyone has an imagination. Art takes it a step further. Through art, kids create something that, until that point, was only imagined. Creating art is a fine way for children to make choices and solve problems. Every step involves making a decision: what color to use, how to make a line, what size to make something, what art medium to use to express feelings. With every choice, the object becomes more and more their own.

Children need an outlet for their emotions and a place to build well-being. According to King and Schwabenlender (1994), “allowing children to be expressive provides them with a sense of empowerment because children are encouraged to express their emotions constructively”

The focus of expressive art program is on the art-making process and the thoughts and feelings that come forward.  New Step for You expressive art classes encourages kids to explore different art mediums, paint or sculpting, dance or play,  singing or playing music, using 3D printing pens or Virtual Reality in a safe space to build self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment.

Sick Kids and Art

The Sick kids and art program are utilized to transform the hospital environment and create opportunities for expression, connection, and self-identity. The program helps children feel more relaxed and calm in an atmosphere that is not always without pain. Making art helps young patients take back some control of their lives, and be proud of their creations.

Art for Kids with Special Needs

Using expressive art for kids with special needs is a way for them to feel less frustrated. Children that have problems with speech struggle to communicate how they feel. For autistic students, it is a way to develop their social skills and for the visually impaired, it provides a way to express themselves with their hands. Creating art projects gives kids the chance to explore their wants, needs, and feelings in a unique and creative way. Art allows children to truly express how they are feeling in a safe and imaginative way.
